APPRENTICESHIP
Description of Trades
Bricklayers: Bricklayers lay brick, block, and stone on the interior and exterior of commercial buildings, industrial buildings, educational buildings and residential buildings such as apartments and houses.
Tuckpointers: Tuckpointers perform restoration work on older buildings to help keep those buildings as usable facilities; duties include grinding out old mortar and replacing it with new mortar.
Tile Setters: Tile setters set ceramic tile and marble on floor and walls in commercial buildings, educational buildings, residential apartments, and houses.

General Requirements: Must be 17 years of age, be a high school graduate or equivalent (GED), furnish a copy of your high school transcript (GED test scores if applicable), have a valid Illinois driver’s license, and pay a $20 application fee. All applicants must be physically able to perform the work of the trade. Good skills in basic math required.
Jurisdiction: The counties of Champaign, Piatt, Ford (southern half), Vermillion, Douglas, Edgar, Coles, Effingham, Cumberland, Clark, Crawford and Jasper
Application Process: The Bricklayers Local 8 Apprenticeship will accept applications for apprentice bricklayers on a continuing basis. Application can be made the second Thursday of the month at Bricklayers Local #8, 3301 N Boardwalk, Champaign, Illinois 61822 the second Thursday of each month from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon. Appointments to make application can be made by calling Shane Garrisson at 618-401-9960.
Upon selection, applicant apprentices will be subject to a pre-employment drug screening and physical which are necessary for entrance into the apprenticeship program.
Apprenticeship Training: If you complete 4,500 hours of on-the-job training and 480 hours of related classroom instruction, you will then be considered for journeyperson.
Wages: Median pay is $19.06 per hour or $39,640 per year
